Ian Fry is an Austin, Texas-based percussionist, musical director, and executive director of the non-profit organization All Rhythms, which has been providing diverse enrichment programs to the Austin area since 2012. He received his musical training from the Eastman School of Music in New York. Ian's versatility spans various musical genres, from classical to rock, jazz, Indian, and Latin music. He serves as a prominent percussion substitute for the Austin Symphony Orchestra and other Texas orchestras. His collaborations with renowned percussionist Luis Conte include performances in Conte's Superbien Sextet and the co-creation of an online video course utilized by the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout his career, Ian has performed with a wide array of artists, including Andrea Bocelli, Dirty Projectors, So Percussion, 8th Blackbird, the Canadian Brass, Asleep at the Wheel, and more. He also toured with Andy Friedman and The Other Failures and gained early experience playing bass and drums with the Rehoboth Temple Gospel Choir in Harlem, NYC. Additionally, he performed with "Leaf" Clive Phillips and Bran Van 3000 at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2008. Notably, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards as the musical director of Tortilla Factory under Tony "Ham" Guerrero. Deeply influenced by his numerous visits to Santiago de Cuba, Ian formed the Cuban band Sofrito y Su Melao. He has performed with local groups such as Conga San Agustín during the 2019 carnaval and received an award for playing the Tres-Dos bell with Conga San Pedrito in the 2018 carnaval. His most recent trip in December 2023 included performances with Los Jubilados del Caribe and participation in various rumbas and bembes during the Día de Santa Barbara. |
